Choosing various colors for your Cambridge house painting is more difficult than what you think. This is because a wrong choice of shade can either make your house appear too subtle or too vivid. Aside from that, a wrong choice of color can lead your house to appear featureless and too plain. On the extreme side, bold colors can overwhelm the entire architecture of your house. This may also be a cause of disappointment on the part of your neighbors.
To optimize the colors that you will choose for your Cambridge house painting, it is better to choose shades that will highlight the most interesting parts of your house. If you can do this correctly, you may even be successful in hiding unsightly marks and other forms of imperfections that may be found on your house. It can result to your houses’ better visual appeal and market value.
If your home is more than ten years old, you may want to use a color scheme that can highlight its advanced age. Usually, you can achieve this effect using classic color schemes. For this task, you may hire a contractor to recreate the original shade of the Cambridge house painting and to examine the chips of the old paint. You may also refer to various historic color samples and choose the shades that were more likely used when the house was built.
If you want a new type of shade but still prefer to retain the classic touch of your house, you may opt to choose shades that emphasize the architectural details of your house. However, you should strike a good balance between applying modern shades to old designs and retaining the balance of the shades for your entire house. It would also be a helpful reminder to examine the shades that your neighbors have been using on their houses to avoid standing out too much.
While using the shades of your neighbors’ houses can give you a hint on what shade to use, you should not copy the exact shades that they are using for their house painting. You should choose shades that can help your house to stand out. However, these shades should still produce harmony with the adjacent houses.
If you are having a hard time looking for color inspiration, you may use elements from nature. For instance, you may look at the greenery that is surrounding your entire house and produce a color scheme that greatly matches this feature. All you have to do is experiment on the subtle shades that you see around you so you can create great results.
Another good reference that you can check out is the color of your roof. This does not mean that you should closely match the color of your house with the roof. This simply means that you should come up with various color combinations that harmonize with and complement the color of your roof.
There are some instances that there details in your house need not be painted. For cases like these, you should adequately inform your contractor before they set out to perform the Cambridge painting job for you. This will significantly reduce the chances of having unsatisfactory results.

There are various things that you should consider before hiring a contractor to perform Salem interior painting for different rooms of our house. One of these is choosing the interior paint finishes that have good durability and are easy to maintain. This will aid you in determining if the interior paint can withstand the need for multiple rounds of cleaning routines that you need to perform inevitably. Generally, an interior paint finish with a greater sheen can withstand these routines better.
As for the Salem interior painting for your children’s rooms, various contractors will advise you to have satin painting or eggshell finish to be done on the walls of these rooms. On the other hand, they may recommend a semigloss finish for the rooms’ moldings and doors. Like the shiny interior paint finish, this can also withstand multiple cleaning routines.
If you want an illusion of an old fashioned or worn out appearance for your rooms, you may use flat paint finishes for your furniture and walls. If you are also considering the durability of the Salem interior paintingfor multiple cleaning sessions, the contractors recommend that you obtain an eggshell finsh for your walls. For your trim, they will more likely advise you to have flat enamel paint.
If you prefer to use a paint with high gloss, you should use this sparingly. Ideally, this should be used on certain parts of the rooms that you want to highlight. Contractors recommend the use of high gloss paint for your trims and doors. If you attempt to use this for the entire room, there is a large chance that the excessively shiny surface will suggest that the room is uninviting and cold. Before you allow your contractors to apply high gloss paints for your selected surfaces, you should make sure that they are thoroughly cleaned and well-polished to promote better adhesion of the paint. This will also discourage unsightly marks from being highlighted.
For your ceilings, the contractors will usually suggest that you buy matte or premixed paints. These types of paints can readily be bought from home improvement or paint shops. Usually, when you are considering the type of paint for your ceiling, the durability of the paint is not an issue, as you do not need to clean this type of surface often. Therefore, you may buy paints with more inexpensive formulations for this part. A recommended type of shade for Salem interior painting of your ceiling is flat and regularly tinted wall paint. Ideally, this should match the color scheme of the entire room. You may also choose the eggshell finish if you have no concerns regarding concealing of surface imperfections. For good reflection of light, you may choose a glossier interior paint finish. However, this should only be done by your contractor if your ceiling has been recently resurfaced.
Certain rooms such as your kitchen and bathroom are usually exposed to a high degree of moisture, heat, and humidity. These factors should also be taken into consideration before you hire a contractor to paint these rooms. A recommended type of paint for these rooms is semigloss paint. You may also use an eggshell or a satin finish for these rooms.
The outside paint of a house can reflect the personality of the people living in it and nowadays, Salem house painting is one of the most affordable ways to improve the impression of one’s home. However, it takes a lot of effort to do this job. One needs to clean the surface first, determine the type of paint to be used, and apply it. Always remember that a person should not paint a house when it is too hot because direct exposure to hot sun will damage paint jobs. It is best to paint in late spring or early fall when the weather is neither too hot nor cold. Washing the outside part of the house should be the first thing to do since it is the dirtiest and most exposed. Stubborn dirt and stains should be brushed and rinsed using ordinary garden hose. On the other hand, if the house is a large one, a person can use high-pressure spray cleaner. It automatically removes dirt, mildew, and stains. It can even remove peeling paint. Caution should be made when using these though. After washing, now the house has a dirt-free foundation ready for the new coating.
Now, one must start covering plants to protect them from paint drips and spills. Trees and bushes may get in the way too and it is best to cover it first with canvas drop cloths. After doing so, it is time to apply an appropriate primer to trouble areas, especially if raw wood or bare metal were exposed after the paint was removed. Applying a primer is a necessity in every Salem house painting project because it gives a firm foundation for finishing paints and provides extra protection against elements like heat, strong winds, humid environment and rain. It produces a uniform surface that provides a sheen and appearance of the finish coat. Primers also increase the overall quality and durability of the paint job. It grips the surface and helps the exterior of the house to last for more than 10 years. When working on new wood, priming is always needed.
The kind of primer to be used also depends on the choice of paint. For instance, latex paint requires use of latex primers; for solvent-thinned paints, a solvent-base primer is needed; and for metals, use of metal primers is a must. Next to application of primers is the paint. But before shopping for paints, one must consider the color first and the amount of paint that will be used. Check first the size of the house or the part to be painted, the condition of the surfaces, and the type of coating to be used. In determining how much paint is needed, measure first the perimeter of the house. And then multiply that figure by the height. Divide the final figure by the square-foot coverage specified on the can of paint to determine the number of gallons needed for one coat. Carefully calculate the necessary paint to be used, and then buy an extra gallon to be sure. Ask for help from paint professionals in stores if not sure of the estimates. Be sure to provide them the exact measurements of the house.
The next important thing to consider in Salem house painting is the color. In painting old houses, it is not advisable to use striking and glossy colors. Seek advice from experts in analyzing old paint chips, and then he will recreate the original color more suitable to the type of house. Other nearby houses and buildings should be put in consideration too. Avoid having the exact same color with those of the neighboring houses but be sure that the colors will not clash and contrast one another. In choosing colors for houses, one needs to check other parts of the house that are already painted like the roof and the interior of the house. It does not need to be perfectly the same or matched but the colors should look good together. Other parts of the house do not necessarily need painting like brick walls and wooden doors.
A natural look is always a good choice which will greatly blend with the landscape around the house. To make a house look larger, use light colors especially white or cream. A house will look more dignified and classic with these colors but beware since it can make the house look dull and dirt becomes quite obvious with these colors too. Using dark colors make a house look smaller but it gives emphasis to details, particularly for window sashes, moldings, and columns. It won’t show dust and stains. However, it is more likely to fade and it absorbs heat and causes more moisture problems than lighter shades. One may decide to use a single color but it makes the house look flat and uninteresting. Using too many colors, on the other hand may result in mismatches and overwhelming impact on the new image of the house. Maintain a balance of the color families at hand and use a lighter or darker shade for accents instead of looking for a different color. Be innovative in the choice of colors and make exciting results! Just remember this tips and follow necessary procedures and it is sure that any Salem home improvement project will be a success.

Between the rain, wind, and cold temperatures, winter can be hard on your Salem wood fence. Spending time outdoors may be the last thing most Salem homeowners want to do this time of year, but a little extra Salem Fence maintenance now can help increase the life span of your fence and reduce the problems you’ll encounter come spring.
What Winter Weather Does to a Salem Wood Fence
While heat and sunlight are generally the biggest culprits when it comes to Salem wood fence damage, winter’s unrelenting moisture and shifting temperatures can also cause problems. Here’s a look at how winter weather affects your fencing materials:
Rain and snow
Prolonged exposure to moisture weakens the fibers of a Salem wood fence and opens the door for mold, mildew and rot. A waterproof stain or sealant is your best defense against the rain. It’s also important to keep leaves and other organic matter from becoming wedged between fence boards, as this inhibits air flow and creates a trap for moisture.
Changing temperatures
Shifts in temperature cause the wood to expand and contract, which can cause knots to fall out and leave knotholes in your Salem fence. If left unaddressed, knotholes can invite rot and pests to infest your fence.
Shifting soil
Heavy precipitation can cause water to soak into the soil and form sinkholes, landslides and shifts that could impact your fence’s supporting posts. Keep an eye on your fence posts throughout the winter to ensure they remain straight, strong and rot-free.
Falling debris
Overhanging tree limbs can break under the weight of snow and ice, causing damage to your Salem fence on their way to the ground. Monitor any trees within falling distance of your fence, and trim back any branches that pose a threat.
Winter Maintenance Tips for Wood Fences
Applying a quality fence stain before winter is your first line of defense against seasonal damage. However, there are a few steps you should take throughout the winter months to ensure the ongoing health of your fence:
- Inspect your Salem wood fence following significant storms. Check for damage and ensure the posts are still level by running a piece of string along the tops. Look for dips or rises in the string, and examine those posts to see if repairs are needed. Making structural repairs now will prevent the damage from worsening throughout the winter.
- Routinely clean your fence of leaves or other organic matter that has settled on the rails or become lodged between boards.
- Keep the cement footings clear of dirt, bark dust or other matter. This may seem counter intuitive, but doing so reduces the likelihood that the cement will become cracked by trapped moisture or changes in temperature.
- If possible, promptly replace any boards that have been damaged.
Like the rest of the yard, a Salem wood fence can easily become neglected during the winter months. By keeping up on these basic Salem Fence maintenance practices, however, you can minimize winter damage to your Salem fence and prevent further problems in the spring.

Summer, winter, spring or fall, residents of Salem continue to enjoy the great outdoors from their decks, patios, pool areas, or gazebos. And some of those areas of pleasure have definitely seen better days. Are you thinking about restoring the surfaces inside or outside your home to their former glory? Will deck cleaning and refinishing alone do the trick on your deck that’s seen better days? Is there a right way or a wrong way to restore a deck for beauty and endurance?
Doing it yourself home improvement may sound like the way to go, but in spite of long-standing home improvement do-it-yourself trends, there are extremely compelling reasons to hire a professional Salem painting and carpentry contractor who offers deck cleaning and refinishing services to achieve the results you want with less of your own sweat and tears and at less cost to you.
As you know, bringing the surfaces of your Salem home or commercial space back to beauty involves an accepted process that involves time, money and the expenditure of a lot of energy. You must clean, restore, beautify and finally protect porous and non-porous surfaces in order to assure successful restoration and to guarantee enduring results.
Here are 5 reasons to consider hiring a professional surface restoration company – using your Deck as an example:
Cleaning Your Deck Takes Time, Money, and Energy
Obviously, you have to clean your wood deck thoroughly before anything else can be done to restore it to its’ former beauty. Sounds easy! But, on second look, if your outdoor deck has been relatively unattended for a number of years, you’ll see embedded dirt, mildew stains, and weathering you may never have noticed before. You knew things were bad – but this bad? Will pressure washing alone do the trick? Perhaps not, so to begin, go to your local home improvement center and purchase a deck cleaner that will restore your wood to its natural beauty without yellowing or bleaching. Which deck cleaner will you choose? Maybe the sales help can give you a clue, but maybe not. How much work is involved in cleaning your deck, even with the help of a power washer and the deck cleaner you have just purchased?
Stripping Your Deck Takes Time, Money and Energy
Stripping an old deck to prepare it for beautification is the second necessary step in the restoration process. You see, you have to strip any deteriorating wood or unwanted finish from the surface to make way for the application of more products. So, now, head back to the home improvement center to buy another product – a deck stripping product with stain and finish remover. Be sure and corral the sales person again for help in deciding which one will most effectively remove old oil and latex stains from your deck. Does he really know what he’s talking about? It’s a must to prepare the wood for any new finish or stain. How much work is involved in stripping your deck, even with the help of the deck stripping product you have just purchased?
Protecting and Beautifying Your Deck Takes Time, Money and Energy
O.K. – Your deck is finally cleaned and stripped. You have prepared the wood for a new finish or a stain that will not only make it look beautiful and new, but will protect it from the elements. Has your finish seen better days? Do you want a different look this time around? You’ll need to go to the home improvement center again and look for a semitransparent stain – or a rich transparent oil finish – to enhance the beauty of your deck.
Don’t want to stain? It’s still important to saturate your newly cleaned wood surface with a clear water repellent. This will help protect it from rain that can cause swelling, shrinking, warping and cracking. Look for a water repellent with a mildewcide to slow the growth of mildew during warmer months. Do you have the right one? How much work is involved in that application?
Hiring a Professional Surface Restoration Company Can Save Time, Money and Energy
Finding a reputable Salem deck restorer or deck construction company you can count on is as easy as asking for references. Many will even be happy to show you pictures of their work or to take you to homes of satisfied customers to see their patio decks first-hand. Once you have found a company to restore, rebuild, or even build a brand new deck for you, you’re on your way to getting the best results for the least effort and expenditure. Check deck builders on-line and comparison shop. Ask your neighbors and by all means, check with that sales professional at your local home improvement center. He or she knows the builders in your area and can really help you this time!
You Get What You Pay For
Remember – When you hire a professional deck cleaner and refinisher, you are not doing the buying, agonizing over the decisions, renting equipment, or doing any of the heavy labor involved in the restoration process.
Here are some of the services you can expect to find when you hire a professional firm to work on projects in your home, office or commercial space:
- Pressure washing services for your Salem home, rooftop, patio, sidewalk, driveway, parking lot, pool area, pool deck, or any other exterior surface.

If you need to have the inside of your home painted, you may be trying to decide whether you should do it yourself or pay someone else to do it. There are various reasons why having a professional perform the job is a good idea. Find out why going this route will save you time, effort, and perhaps even money in the long run.
Cambridge interior painting is a task that can take weeks to complete, depending on the size of your house and the number of coats you are applying. The height of your ceilings also factor in to the average amount of time. If you have little else to do, perhaps due to taking time off work or being out of a job in general, completing this job might not be a hardship. However, if you work full time and have little time off, it will likely be difficult to complete this chore within a few weeks. Hiring a professional can ensure that it gets done quickly, and that you do not have to spend all of your free time applying paint to your walls.
Another detail that you might notice if you decide to paint is that you likely do not have all the tools you need. Not only will you need paint, paintbrushes, rollers, pans to pour the color into, and tape, to name a few things, but you will also need a ladder, a tarp, and other tools that not everyone has. This is especially true if you have vaulted ceilings. Letting an expert do the interior painting for you means that you do not have to buy all of these supplies on your own.
Not only would hiring a painter save you from having to buy lots of Cambridge paint supplies, but you would also not have to purchase the necessary tools. Instead, you could simply pay the painter only for what you use, saving you from having tons of supplies sitting around the house that you likely would not use for years, if at all. Additionally, having an expert do the Cambridge interior painting would save you from having to purchase a tall ladder if you do not already have one.
Clearly, having someone else do the job can save you lots of time, effort, and money. This is especially true if you can manage to find a coupon for a painter. Rather than spending all your time off doing the work yourself, you should let someone else paint your home the shade you want.

Anyone who’s ever picked up a paint color sample card from the paint store is likely familiar with the name associated with each paint chip. Many people find these color names intriguing (as they were designed to be), but most people have no idea how much influence the color’s name has over their Beverly Farms paint selection process. You professionals Beverly Farms painter can provide you with the best information on color choices for your home that will make it look and feel great so give them a call and see what they can do for you.
Influenced by Paint Color Names
A surprising number of people rely on the color names to give them important information about the paint color on the card. In fact, in 2009, “Apartment Therapy” did a subscriber poll asking people if they ever chose a new paint color based on its name. Of the respondents, 64% admitted to doing so at least “sometimes”! As one of the contributors wrote, “With only a cursory look at the chips, we all voted for ‘Quiet Moments’. We just couldn’t imagine sleeping in a room called ‘Arctic Gray’, although the color was really nice.”
Of course, the paint named “Quiet Moments” is not actually made of any quiet moments… any more than there is anything arctic about the paint named “Arctic Gray”. But obviously, these are not just arbitrarily chosen words appended to the card to help you remember which paint color is which… oh, no. In reality, a paint company hires professional writers, Advertising Copywriters, and the like, to come up with meaningful, image-evoking, nostalgia-inducing, emotion-linked names in hopes that they will attract you to one of their colors.
That’s right, the simple 1 to 3 word name inscribed in the corner of every paint chip, which is usually something like, “summer morn”, “evening kiss”, “sweet tomato”, or “harvest breeze”, is the product of a tremendous amount of time and energy on the behalf of any paint company.
The Paint Company Practice of Sample Card Marketing
The motive behind all this pretense is that paint color sample cards are used as a major marketing tool for paint companies. Paint brands encourage you to collect their sample cards because doing so is just like taking a paint company brochure home with you. It’s essentially free advertising, right in the customers’ hands! The more color cards you have from a paint company – the more likely you are to buy one of their paints.
The color names on these cards are a powerful use of a paint company’s marketing reach. But in order for this advertising to work, the marketers have to give you a product message. If an advertiser can connect a visual cue to an auditory stimulus that activates an emotional response, and then associate that response with their brand, then they have given you one complete marketing message – with every color!
The Emotional Sway of Color Names
But here’s the part that hits home. The survey results mentioned above only reveal the people that consciously and intentionally used the color’s name to make a color choice; we would suggest that – especially since the words are so emotionally linked – a much greater proportion of paint buyers have chosen a color, at least partially because of an impression made with this word association gimmick – even without realizing it.
So, perhaps we should make this point yet a little plainer. The series of words used as the “name” for a color is completely non-descriptive of the actual color, and has basically been arbitrarily assigned. This is more evident in names like “Long Vacation”, “Triumphant”, “Old Pickup”, and “Noteworthy Tone” which don’t even vaguely suggest a general hue. Most likely, paint color names are generated by a team of writers (or perhaps a computer) that produces a list of words with proven emotional significance. Those words are then assigned to a given color based on the general impressions of a creative team (who probably have advertising backgrounds). So the names do not describe colors; they do not relate to the actual color they are attached to (at all, in some cases).
To put it another way, when you choose an interior color because you like its name, please keep in mind that there is not actually going to be any “Summer Camp” in that bucket of paint; and nobody is going to walk into a room and feel like they’ve entered a “Mountain Resort” just because you chose to paint your wall that color; and you will likely never even remember that your hallway is supposed to feel like a “Festive Celebration” unless you actually paint that color’s name on the wall there (which would be really funny – please send me pictures if you do that!).
Hey, It Happens to the Best of Us!
But don’t feel bad if you have caught yourself considering a color’s name a little too carefully, we know how easy it is to do. In fact, I started researching this article after I realized I needed to start covering the color names on each sample card I showed to my girlfriend because she kept using the names to form opinions about the colors! (“I don’t care if you dislike sun-dried tomatoes… what do you think of the color ‘sun-dried tomatoes’!?”) We have all caught ourselves being swayed by these catchy names, but it can be hard to separate a color from an impression you have formed about it. Remaining objective is an important part of the formula for creating beautiful spaces in your Beverly Farms home.

Finally paint that excites the man of the house! Up until now the job of painting was something men did only out of necessity, and with no real excitement. That is about to change. What about painting a huge TV and movie projection screen in the time it takes to use your paint roller and cover the area. A new and exciting paint product is on the market, and I am sure it will be on many wall in the near future.
Paint On Screen is paint that you can use to create a projection screen on any paintable surface that is smooth. It is as easy as painting a wall with typical paint. The only catch here is that the wall surface must be smooth. Textured walls will not work. It goes on the same as any water based paint. Roll it on wait for it to dry, then set back and watch your favorite movie or television program.
Rule of thumb if you live west of the Salem typically you will have textured walls. Everyone living on the east side will typically have smooth walls. If you are the ones on the east side of the country this application will be a no brainer.
However those of us that live on the west side of the Salem and have textured walls, and a few more challenges. It cannot be applied directly to a textured wall. It is necessary to find a board or something that is the correct size, perfectly smooth, paintable and simply attach it to your wall first and then apply the paint. It is a little more complicated and costly but the outcome is an outstanding projection screen.
Another upside is that it has no wires and you can create any size the meets your needs. I think this is an exciting option for those who use large projection screens. If it gets dirty or damaged all you have to do is clean it or repaint, no replacing. The homeowner I spoke to said he was pleased with the quality.
Just to throw out another option in the world of movie viewing, consider the inflatable outdoor screen it blows up to 12 feet and has a pretty good viewing screen for a large group at an outdoor party. It is easy to put up and take down for a special outdoor event. It is typically under $200.00, another way to have fun with family and friends
I enjoy watching movies and a little TV, but nothing like my husband. When I told him about this option he was extremely happy, we are finishing off our basement and home theater. He has been pricing large projection screens and had sticker shock. The beauty of this is that the extra money we saved on the screen can now be put into something else, like upgraded flooring, or that very expensive leather couch I wanted… Yeah now we are all happy.
