Salem Painting Contractor Consumer Awareness | MA Painter
Consumer Awareness
Prior to hiring a painting contractor in Massachusetts the following questions should be addressed.
Is the contractor is properly licensed?
Massachusetts law requires all painting contractors to be registered Home Improvement Contractors (HIC). Check for license status and complaints with the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Safety.
Will the contractor supply a copy of their Certificate of Insurance?
Homeowners want to ensure that the contractor is covered for both Workers Comp and Liability. Prior to work starting, you should be provided with a Certificate of Insurance specifically listing your property. This document, supplied by the contractor’s insurance agent, is your guarantee that the insurance policy is active.
Does the contract clearly identify the scope of work, materials to be used, and all pricing?
Jobs over $1000 require written contracts in Massachusetts. Pay particular attention to the scope of labor, quality of materials, and whether the quote is a firm price or an estimate.
Clear communications between the Homeowner and Contractor will ensure all expectations are met.
How will this work impact your life?
Having workers at your home can be disruptive. Seek out contractors who specialize in the residential market. Your project should receive 100% of the contractor’s attention, from start to finish, with the goal being returning your life to normal as soon as possible.
What is the Warranty for the services provided?
Does the price you are paying include a written warranty? Even a poorly prepped paintjob will look OK when just finished. Protect your investment by only using painting contractors who stand by their work with a written Warranty.
